Salvage HIFU for biopsy confirmed local prostate cancer recurrence after radical prostatectomy and radiation therapy

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a treatment option for low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer and more recently has been used as salvage therapy after failed radiation therapy. The article presents a case of local recurrence with biochemical failure after radical prostatectomy and salvage external beam radiation therapy with salvage HIFU without biochemical recurrence at 20 months. Toronto hospital tests new, high-precision method of prostate cancer treatment

Doctors at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital are exploring a new, more precise way of administering radiation therapy to patients with prostate cancer. Stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy, or SABR, allows doctors to give patients a high dose of radiation in a short period of time, replacing the long hours of treatment commonly associated with radiation therapy. “What’s really revolutionary about this is that patients used to have to come for up to eight weeks of radiotherapy — one treatment per day, five days a week,” said Sunnybrook oncologist Andrew Loblaw. “Now with this new trial, we’ve been able to show that you

Prostate Cancer Deaths Rare Among Low-Risk Patients on Active Surveillance

Men receiving active surveillance were 24 times more likely to die from causes other than prostate cancer over 15 years. Caucasian men with favorable-risk prostate cancer who opt for active surveillance have a low risk of progression to lethal cancer for a decade after diagnosis, according to researchers. Adding chemotherapy to hormone therapy added 14 months to patients’ lives in study

Chemotherapy at the start of hormone therapy can extend the lives of men with prostate cancer that has spread beyond the gland, a new study finds. Over nearly 29 months of follow-up, men with advanced prostate cancer who received the combination therapy lived almost 14 months longer than men who received only hormone therapy (58 months versus 44 months), researchers said. Active Surveillance May Be Safe After Prostate Tumor Upgrade

Men with low-risk prostate cancer on active surveillance whose tumors are upgraded after a biopsy might not have to rush into surgery, according to new research. The men in this study had localized low-risk prostate cancer — a Gleason score of 3 + 3 or lower and a clinical stage of T1 or T2. All had a tumor upgrade while being managed with active surveillance The majority of the men who chose to remain on active surveillance after a tumor upgrade, rather than undergo immediate treatment, had no further progression of tumor grade.
