A Message from PCCN – Toronto – September 2020

Click here to read our message to all prostate cancer patients.  It includes the latest news about the merger of Prostate Cancer Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society plus a COVID-19 update.

Individual Support Continues

The Support Line (416-932-8820) continues to operate if you have questions and would like individual support.  Please leave a reasonably detailed message and we will have an appropriate volunteer get back to you.  Similarly, you can email us at info@pcstoronto.ca for support.  We are monitoring the Support Line and email more closely than usual while this situation exists.

Individual peer navigator support for patients and partners/caregivers also continue to be available through TrueNth.  Click here for more information, including a link to their website.   (Some of the Prostate Cancer Support Toronto members are also involved with this program.)

If you are concerned about the effects of this virus on your treatment, click here for one of the many article that consider this.  Remember that most prostate cancers are slow growing, so a minor delay may not be significant.  As always, talk to your health care team if you are concerned.  Click here for a video titled “Practical Advice FOR Prostate Cancer PATIENTS for weathering changes caused by COVID-19”  Also, don’t forget that new articles are still being posted.  To check out the latest ones, go to RESOURCES/Recent News menu item under SUPPORTING YOU.

For more information about the Coronavirus, what you can do to reassure yourself, and strategies for dealing with the current situation, click here for words of wisdom from Dr. Mark Moyad.

For a more technical, although quite readable, look at the virus, and the most effective way to combat it, click here.

A Message from the Board of Directors of PCCN Toronto (March 23, 2020)

We just wanted to send out a note to all those who are regular volunteers and supporters of
PCCN-Toronto.

During this period of suspension we will strive to duplicate as best we can, the quality of
support and advice that we have provided. To this end we encourage men, their families, and
caregivers who are asking for suggestions or information, to use our support line and email
address through which they will be connected to someone in our team of volunteers.

I know many of us look forward to the regular PSG meetings both as an opportunity to interact
with other volunteers and, more importantly, to help the newly diagnosed or survivors with
issues they wish to discuss.

We are all disappointed at having had to cancel the upcoming meetings. Hopefully, this will be
for a short duration only. However, that remains to be seen.

We would ask that you please keep in touch with the website for current news and we look
forward to meeting again soon.

In the meantime, please be safe and healthy.

  • Should a 4+3 or higher ever consider focal (AnCan always navigates away for these guys)
  • Is every 3+4 a candidate?
  • What about high-volume Gleason 6 patients?
  • Are all focal therapies born equal?
  • If you have Gleason 4 in your gland, how can you be assured it has not micro-spread within the gland?
  • Should you only get focal therapy from a Center of Excellence?
  • How do you protect against providers offering focal therapy to men who are not good candidates?
  • Can we clinically document lower side effects from focal?
  • What is the recurrence rate for the various focal therapies? … do the HCPs discuss recurrence rates?

This free webinar occurred on August 31, 2023.  Here is the recording of the recent AnCan webinar featuring Dr. Laurence Klotz entitled “Is focal therapy right for your prostate cancer?”  Dr. Klotz is known as the father of active surveillance, but he has been involved in other advances in prostate care since the mid-1990s, including focal therapy.
